Choose your application route and work status, then collect the documents that apply to you. Check the current list from your consulate or the UGE before filing.
Choose your application route
- From outside Spain: apply for a visa through the Spanish consulate responsible for your place of residence.
- From inside Spain: apply for a UGE residence authorization while legally present in Spain.

Application form and fee
- Application form for your route: the signed MIT form for UGE, or the form specified by your consulate.
- For UGE: paid 790-038 fee form showing the payment reference. Add a separate receipt only if payment is not shown on the form.
a) Criminal record certificate and declaration
- For UGE: criminal record certificates from every country where you resided during the two years before applying.
- Signed declaration of no criminal record in the countries where you resided during the previous five years. Get the editable declaration template.
- Apostille or legalize each foreign criminal record certificate. Add a sworn Spanish translation if it is not in Spanish.
Consular applicants: follow your consulate's criminal-record list. UGE may waive a certificate already supplied for a qualifying Spanish authorization.
b) At least three months with your employer or clients
Work relationship
- Employee: employment contract showing at least three months with the foreign employer.
- Self-employed: professional service contract showing at least three months with the foreign client.
- Employer or client letter stating your duties, permission to work remotely from Spain, conditions and pay in euros.
- Official commercial-register extract or equivalent showing that the foreign company has operated for at least one year.
Income
- Payslips or invoices for the three months before filing.
- Bank-issued, signed or stamped record for the same three months, in your name. Highlight each deposit that matches a payslip or invoice.
- If income is below the threshold, add bank evidence of liquid funds covering the shortfall for the authorization period.
c) Professional qualifications or work experience
- Relevant degree or vocational qualification; or proof of at least three years in comparable work.
- If using experience: official work-history record and employer letters with dates and specific duties.
- Apostille or legalize foreign degrees and official work-history records. Add sworn Spanish translations of all non-Spanish qualification or experience documents.
- If your profession is regulated, check the UGE recognition or notarial-declaration requirement.
d) Curriculum vitae
- Current CV in Spanish, with roles and dates matching your supporting records. A simple translation is sufficient.
e) Social Security commitment or qualifying health insurance
- Employee, Spanish route: employer's Spanish Social Security registration and commitment to register you in the General Regime before work begins.
- Employee, home-country route: if a Social Security agreement with Spain applies (e.g. UK or US), your employer can request a certificate of coverage. It must expressly cover remote work from Spain.
- Self-employed: commitment to register with Spanish RETA after approval and before work begins. Edit the RETA commitment letter and check the timing.
- If a Social Security certificate does not include Spanish public-health entitlement, add qualifying health insurance. Travel insurance and policies with reimbursement only, copayments or waiting periods do not qualify.
f) Proof of self-employment (self-employed applicants only)
- Official self-employment, business, tax or Social Security record from the country where your activity is registered, showing at least three months of activity before you apply.
- If that country has no separate self-employment register, add an explanation and equivalent tax records, client contracts, invoices and matching payments.
- Apostille or legalize the foreign official self-employment record. If it is not in Spanish, add a sworn Spanish translation.
g) Proof of entry into Spain and passport
- Valid passport. For UGE, include a legible copy of every page.
- If applying inside Spain: entry stamp or other record showing legal presence when filing.
- If entry is unclear: dated travel records or boarding passes.
- If applying at a consulate, follow its passport and residence-jurisdiction requirements.
Final review before submission
- Names, dates, duties and payment amounts match across contracts, letters, invoices or payslips and bank records.
- Each foreign public document has the required apostille or legalization and translation.
- Forms, fees and document copies match your application route.
